Today was another fascinating day of culture,  we travelled to Matera in Basilicata, which was some 50 miles from our hotel but well worth the journey. Another UNESCO World heritage Site, due to its unique cave dwellings that still remain here, a sight not to be missed.  Monks created the orginal maze of living spaces and churches as they sought refuge from infidels at the end of the first millennium and it is amazing  that they still remain here.

In the mid 1950’s the area was cleared and some 15,000 people were moved from the area into newer housing in Matera but slowly there is regenerated in the old city with hotels , homes and shops being inhabited once again and a thriving tourist industry established.

We enjoyed several hours wanting through a warren of alleyways, visiting a furnished cave house and some of the cave churches  -all amazing places if you are interested in history and culture.

Nevertheless, many great views, fantastic photographic opportunities and great cafes for a beer or ice-cream – what more could you ask for?
